It doesn't function well as the middle of a trilogy (it unroots the first film but doesn't really lead naturally to a third final movie). There is also a lot I liked about it. I loved the Rose Rico character. I liked a lot the things people complained about. But the stuff with Luke was pretty bad. And it was so focused on flipping tropes, it never really felt like it took the time to be a great movie on its own (I was half compelled by the Kylo Ren sequence during his speech, but then it just felt like the writer started talking directly to fans: that would have been truly interesting if he and she had formed some kind of alliance in that moment)</p></blockquote><p></p>
