i totally agree, Umbran - with no components, it must just be intense concentration.
And that is what causes the AoO - he's not concentrating on defending himself.
Besides, what would a paladin need other than his eyes, and his divine power to determine whether someone was an evil-doer?
It just shows up in the aura - an aura that it takes some concentration to be able to peer deep enough into to determine....
