Paladin Mounts Stories...

Curious to know which mounts people have chosen and how they fared ... Are Paladin mounts always dying like some threads imply ? Any mounts too strong even for their level ? Any interesting stories ? Any good ideas to help out wanna be Paladins ?

My Paladin's father was also a Paladin, and when he died the heavy war horse ran back home to me. And starting as a level 4 character and having a level 14 mount, is great.

They survive just fine if taken proper care of. Hire a few low level mercenaries to take care of all horses... won't cost too much.

I run a halfling paladin with a celestial riding dog.

He does pretty well against normal damage. He is currently at 6 HD, so he has some DR, which is the only reason he is still alive (that and Lay on Hands from his rider).

He is not what I would call extremely survivable in combat. He's had two really, really close calls, but I admit they were both partially my fault for being away from the party by more than one round. No more scouting ahead for this paladin. :)

His biggest weakness is saving throws as they are very, very low compared to the paladin, and it's pretty expensive to try and raise them because the paladin has to equip both himself AND his mount with magic.

With better tactics and more defensive magic, he'll be fine. Of course, I NEVER intentially get him involved in direct melee.

Artoomis I remeber your thread about helping survive Paladins dog :)

Just reading the book the impression is that the Paladins mount gets lots of stuff HD and saves... and in our games mounts very rarely get targetted because Riding skill roll for AC usually is very high... area spells are mostly forgotten where the horses are concerned...

As a combat companion they seem great too.... just bad to have to leave em behind when dungeons show up...

Roar!

Druid in my campaign has her heart set upon getting a dragon, as presented in Defenders of the Faith . So until 13th level, she's flailing around without a mount. :D

But I generally respect a mount like I'd respect animal companions for a druid or a familiar for a wizard -- they're basically a permenant NPC in the group.

And, yeah, the fire-breathing tank may need to be left behind when they go into the dungeon....but I've got a sweet mental image of the entire party riding on a dragon, swooping over a forest, pursuing some evil force on another dragon...we'll have warriors jumping onto the bad dragon to confront the evil, wizards shooting from the back of the good, and the two dragons duking it out in midair!

Ah, if only half of the things I could come up with could be up to a movie screen.....
;)

well, this isn't about a paladin mount, but my fighter did own a horse once. Durring a large battle, he critically failed a ride check, and the horse fell on top of him. While still pinned, an enemey mage cast earthquake in the area, and the fighter fell 100 feet through a shaft in the ground into a cave, hitting the floor hard, just before the horse came down on his back, nearly killing him. That fighter hasn't liked horses all that much since:)
