My DM allowed me to use shield master before the attack was completed, but it was also useful to push enemies off the squishies.He was a dwarf because it was AL and I have a tradition to uphold of my first PC in a public campaign being a dwarf.For my current campaign I have an Oath of Vengeance paladin (I effectively retired my AL PC a while back).  It's also fun, in some ways a similar theme.  Abjure Enemy is useful when bad guys are trying to escape, as is Hunter's Mark.I'm not sure I'd do GWM, your big damage is going to come from smites and in order to smite you have to hit.  Lucky on the other hand is on my list, mounted combat as well (although that depends a lot on campaign).</blockquote>
