D&D 5E Paladin (whose oath is to a deity) crossing into Athas?

What might happen to a paladin whose oath was unfortunately tied to an evil goddess (Beshaba) and they then travelled through a portal into the Dark Sun world of Athas?

I really don’t want to penalise them in any way for a destination choice of mine.

It might be nice for her to be free of this goddess but could the Paladin still rise in levels/still have their power etc?

Any thoughts welcome, cheers.

By the rules it is the power of their oath, not whoever it was sworn to, that grants a paladin their powers.

The paladin may well have issues adapting to Athas' lack of gods and other oddities in-character, but there isn't really any rules-based reason why they would lose any of their abilities, or be unable to advance any further.

Thanks Cap'n.

just out of pure curiosity, what about a cleric?

Clerics do get their power from a 'deity'. However note that this doesn't have to mean a god or goddess: a 'deity' can be a philosophy, a font of primal power, channelling the potential divinity within everyone, or other things like that.

A cleric with a conventional god moving to Arthas would technically be cut off from their deity - until they find a new one, or forge a connection that transcends the planar barriers to their old one, or whatever you think appropriate. If you want to give the cleric some interesting plot, go for it. If you don't want to mess with it, just say that the cleric's connection remains due to how they were transported to Athas.

There are no gods on Athas but that doesn't necessarily mean the gods reach can't extend to Athas. Problem is if you have it work as normal, eventually the SKs are going to find out and stomp them like a bug, or worse. Although that might be fun to play out.

That would indeed be fun to play out. I'm looking forward to that hunt. Cheers.

Talking of which, I asked in a previous post but didn't get any replies. Has anyone got any 5e stats on a Cilops? They are great tracking Dark Sun monsters and would add a ton of dread into a chase?
