Perhaps not strictly a rules question, but this is as an appropriate a forum as any.
The 3.5 paladin can summon his mount for two hours per level per day, but does the paladin have any intuitive sense of the time clock running out? Does the mount know when it's time is up, and can it communicate this to the paladin?
It would be nice for the paladin to get a two minute warning or something of that nature before they make that heroic cavalry charge. It would be a shame for a paladin's mount to suddenly disappear mid-sprint.
How do you handle this in your games?
