Paralysis and Hold

Merlion

First Post
I'm curious about something, as its a little unclear to me.

Are paralysis and hold considered the same thing?

For instance, dragons are immune to sleep and paralysis...does this make them immune to Hold Monster? Or is it only monster effects like a carrion crawlers paralysis?

Paralysis & Hold

They were listed as separate conditions in the 3.0 DMG. So for 3.0 they were not considered the same thing. The hold spells used paralysis for flavor text making it confusing. The 3.5 DMG no longer has the held condition indicating they are the same in 3.5. However, I preferred a distinction between the two as one is a mind-affecting (spells) thing and the other is a physical problem (poison).

Hmm...well I checked and the text of Hold Person, does say paralyzed. And on the Wizards boards I'm being told it is counted as the same thing.

It should be different, but the mentioning of paralysis in the Hold Person description really makes things kinda weird.

There have been quite long discussions about how Freedom of Movement affects mind-affecting spells. Most people agree, that FoM works on Hold Person (because of the mentioning of paralysis, or traditionalism ;)), even though it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, when considering, what kind of effects FoM normally protects against (more physical stuff) and the mind-affecting/compulsion nature of Hold Person.

Anyways, it seems like held is effectively the same as paralyzed AFAIK.

Bye
Thanee
