Path to RttToEE?

What would make a good path for level 1 pc's to make it up to the level required for RttToEE? My players have already been through the Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury at different times so that is out.

Any suggestions for good adventures to get you from 1-4?

When it come to low level adventures I typically toss out Hamlet of Thumble

But for RttToEE I'd give some thought to starting the guys out at level 4. Maybe even 5. It is a really big adventure and you're going to be in those caverns a long, long time.

I ran some homebrew stuff plus a modified Crucible of Freya (Necromancer Games) to get them close to level 3. Then Forge of Fury (WOTC) to get them well into level 4. Then came RttToEE, which took them up to 14 or so.

In terms of plot, it's relatively easy to change the background of most low level adventures and link them up. I had the group tracing a slavery ring through those two adventures, which eventually lead to them unearthing some clues on a long-forgotten cult and going to Hommlet to check things out.

A small series of kobold encounters, culminating in their sor 3 leader... followed by a couple low CR animal encounter while they travel towards Hommlet, a run-in with goblins, vermin scavenging in the party's food, and maybe some kind of fey encounter that's CR 2. Intersperse all of these with a couple of kobold enounters (the ones that got away). By this time your party should be just about 3rd level... possibly throw in a few clues/hooks to the RttToEE that the pcs can't get til later among the loot in these encounters.

Some people recommend to start them right at 4th level because of the mortality rate of the module.

Also, check out montecook's forum on RtToEE.

There is a lot of nice information on Monte's forums. Anyone who hasn't checked it out and is planning on running this should.

I'm leaning towards just starting them out at fourth level. The encounters do seem to be deadly in parts and I don't want anyone to feel cheated right from the start (Big U or such).

We will have a group of six players though, so it should help balance out character deaths if/when they do happen.
