Cultures of Legendfall Due to questions from various individuals figured I would post some of the Cultures around the region. While the Hundred Hands (See below) have taken over the lands, there are many unique cultures that have holdings within the area. Below is the map and a brief history of the region and its groups: Taluman: "Bless this shield, Lady, and keep my child whole. Bless the blade, Lady, and let our enemies fall. Lead with your gloried banners and defend us, Lady, when the land is full of our enemies." - Mother's Blessing, ancient Taluman chant. The Taluman (Tal-you-mahn), or Axemen, are large men and women who have gone from a bellicose nature to defending their ancestral homeland. Taluman are skilled warriors with axe and shield, and their bald pates are marked with intricate drawings made with dyes from their trade with prized Methiran indigo or their native woad. Creators of Taluman Blue dyes, the Axemen also produce fine stocks of wool and flax to be spun into linen textiles and material. Taluman trade with the Children provide the wood they need to burn their hearthfires, and the Children's strong ships have provided for the Taluman's bluesailed mercantile ships. The Taluman have an equal society, and both men and women can be called to the Axe. Due to their culture few Taluman convert to the faith of the Paldo and their Sunlord with its prohibition against male bloodshed. Taluman mothers control the home and its finances along with the choices of their children into adulthood. Many Taluman prentice with the Children's Woodsmiths, learning the arts of carpentry to create fine woodworks that are only surpassed by the Children themselves (and far more common in the homes of the new nobility). The Taluman diet consists of foods akin to a Mediterranean diet, as their sandy soil and heat allows for the growth of similar foodstuffs. Taluman spices are prized throughout the world and thus the Taluman merchant fleets are quite beloved among all ports of call. Methiran - "Silver, Prayer, and Blood. The price of men, gods, and lies" - A Methiran riddle, translated from Ancient Methir. Stoic, calculating, wise and untrusted. The view of most on the Methiran (Met-fear-an) has not changed from the time when the Ancient Methiran lords ruled from the the Horns. The Methiran held a small empire that extended from Isledor curving all the way to the lands of the Children. An uneasy peace has existed between the Taluman and Methiran for time immemorial, but the Isledoros and Longstrider Clans still recall the oppression and trade begrudgingly for the things that the Methiran supply. Silver is the metal of exchange for the Methiran, and the Silver Horn is still considered the standard for trade in the region due to the lack of gold in the range. Methiran hill farmers specialize in the cultivation of cannabis and canvas fiber, and the drug is used by many Methiran nobles in strong liquor known as Venom. The Fangs of Methiran, skilled warriors who have long ago lost the ability to feel some pain due to their use of Venom, are prized for their fury in combat and the frenzy they bring as warriors in the wars around the Horn as hired men. The Methiran who live in the area surrounding the Rivers of the Three Ladies cultivate fine wild rice and indigo, and their hardwood skiffs bear the harvest in to port along with the tart Meti berries that are used in ship's biscuits to protect against scurvy. The Methiran have a strong culture of ancestral worship, which many find strange due to the Room of Elders found in most homes of the Methiran. These Rooms carry the weapons, tools, and preserved skulls of their ancestors placed into alcoves, while the ashes are blessed and placed into the fields for good harvest. Small shrines can be found in each home, and the Great Hall exists in the ancient Methiran capital where the kings, priests, and generals were born to upon death for preservation. Methiran engineers maintain the great works of the Ancient Methiran through scholarship. The capital at Evergreen boasts lamps that are fed from unknown power, and even in the coldest of the Southern season the homes of the Ancient portions of the city are warmed by secret means. The sewers of the Methiran are marvels of ingenuity, and some of the ancient cities like Legendfall still keep Methiran architects to maintain their public works projects. Isledoros - "Arise, Children, and Embrace the Call." Isledor. The Unchained Isle, a place of pleasures of the flesh whose beauty is renowned throughout the World. While the Horn is known for its temperate beauty, Isledoros (Ill - a -door -os) flaunt both beautiful scenery and people. The coppery skin of Isledoros combines with bright gem-like eyes, and the priests of the Sun Lord have embraced the Bejeweled Daughter, Isledoros divinity of beauty, trade, and protection, as a Daughter of the Sun. Isledoros dress in bright finery, and their skills in textiles are the highest fashion. Isledorian textiles are made from all of the materials found in nature, but their rare silks made from enormous moths found in the mulberry orchards of the Isledorian, along with the rare dyes and chemicals they have made for dealing in textiles and tanning. Paldo courtiers are often born and raised from Isledorian stock, and Isledor is the home of many fine houses of training of nobles. Isledor is also the home of some of the few sources of gold in the Horn, along with a rare material that is said to glow in the darkness of the caves it is found in. The priests of the Bejeweled Daughter make items of worship from the glowing gem, and drink a potent liquor made from the glowing dust as the Radiant. --- Just a sample here, more to come of the others :D.
