With apologies... I am taking an extended break from DMing PbPs for a while. If anyone wants to take over the DM's chair for this campaign, you have have my blessing. The basic plot outline appears below. [sblock=Paths of Legend: Resurrection Plot Outline] The shadowstone obelisk in the Barony of Silvergard is not what it seems. Shadowstone has the unique property of absorbing the soul of any living creature who dies while touching it. Depending on the strength of the soul, it sometimes gains additional properties. The Tragedy at Silvergard discovered by the expedition of 1151 was that the entire population, along with several heroes of the Shadow War, sacrificed themselves, body and soul, to construct the obelisk as a prison for the demon lord, Orcus. Being constructed of "occupied" shadowstone meant that a being of pure spirit, an outsider like Orcus, couldn't penetrate the obelisk and escape...or so it was thought. The new god of death, Thanyx, learned of a plot by several Azgundi nobles to release Orcus as part of a plan to return the country to a monarchy and go on a campaign of conquest. It was their plan to enslave the demon lord and use his power to fuel their ambitions. To that end, they began several plots meant to discredit or outright assassinate nobles who opposed them, including Astor's father and later Astor himself, while diverting blame to other groups, including orcs loyal to Thanyx, various thieves' guilds, and the halfling Tal family. Thanyx warned the Lord of Silvergard, Muzdum, but by then, it was too late. The obelisk had cracked and Orcus was beginning to exert his influence. In order to secure his power, Orcus needed the Dagger of Souls, a weapon made of shadowstone, enhanced to transfer the power of those slain with it to its wielder (while siphoning some of that power away to its creator and ultimate master, the Serpent Queen, Azilyk). In the second part of the campaign, Paths of Legend: Rebirth, Silvergard is overrun by undead loyal to Orcus and Thanyx begins losing power as Orcus gains power. The god of the dead recruits the PCs to find the Dagger of Souls before Orcus' agents do. Azilyk, who has been trapped in a ghost-like form since the end of the Shadow War, manipulates all sides in a bid to regain a corporeal form. She strikes a deal with Orcus and the demon lord is freed completely during the final confrontation, in which Thanyx is slain. In the third part of the campaign, Paths of Legend: Redemption, the PCs must organize and lead Azgund and its allies in a new war against Orcus and his undead legions. In order to defeat Orcus, one of the PCs must use the Dagger of Souls against him and become the new god of death. Complicating matters is Azilyk, who will gain power and potentially triumph no matter who wins.[/sblock]
