Pcgen! Help!!

You know I've heard nothing but glowing reviews of this PCGen software. Little did I know you'd have to know friggin Java to run the damn thing. Maybe I bungled the installation, or maybe I'm just a moron, but I can't get this damn thing to work. I've got some sort of java program i got at sun's website....hell. It's all greek to me. HEEEEELLLLP!

...Alternately, does anyone want to make me a few 8th level 3.5e characters....? ;) :D

Alright, a couple things

  1. There are a few of PCGen'ers here on ENWorld's boards, but, in the future, you'd probably get more response going to PCGen's main board here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen/
  2. What version of java are you running? You can determine this by typing

    java -version

at the command prompt. You need version 1.4.x to run the program.
  3. Once you have java installed, you need to download PCGen itself. Go here ( http://pcgen.sourceforge.net/03_downloads.php ) to get linked to the recent releases' downloads.
  4. Unzip all the files into a new directory. I have c:\pcgen\pcgen x-y-z\ (where x, y and z make up the version numbers. Current version is 5.5.5, so my folder is c:\pcgen\pcgen 5-5-5\
  5. Execute the pcgen.jar file in the main directory

Does that help?

Where can you download the 3.5 ed updates then? I was unable to find a link on the PcGen site...

It's already included. Once you have started pcgen go to the Gamemode menu and select 3.5, which makes the RSRD visible. From then, continue as usual.

If you have any more questions/find something that doesn't work, please report it over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen/
