First Post
the game as i have played it has potions, pills, salves, unguents and ointments, but noone ever smokes anything.

i am wondering what goodness folks here have included from smoking. please try and remember that mnay folks here are offended by drug use as you answer!

i am looking ofr odd concoctions, tobacco substitues, and it seems a good place to cover how addiction is handled in-game.

what do you have for me?

In a GURPS campaign I played in a couple years ago, there was "herb." It was essentially halfway between tobacco and cannabis in terms of effect. The GM decribed it as "Smoking an herb-pipe produced the same effect as a couple of beers." In other words a PC could have an Addiction disadvantage using herb just as they could be an alcoholic, but smoking herb <> addict. (Recreational/Social use).

Sean K Reynolds has an item called 'pipeweed of healing' posted on his site. In my games I have expanded upon this idea and smoking items resemble potions in effects - slightly more powerful, but take longer to consume (at least a full round action to use, and usually several rounds).

IMC: Every alchemacial substance comes in three forms - liquid, gas and solid. This basically means three methods of ingestion drink, smoke and eat. I break it down like this

Form - Time To Create - Storage - Price
liquid - standard - closed ontainer that holds liquid - standard
gas - (-1 week) - tied pouch - x 2
eat - (+1 week) - almost anywhere - standard

handy!

The Book of Vile Darkness has a section of Drugs and Addiction and several examples of possible drugs (including vapors)

I once took an adept NPC from a published adventure and made several of her available "potions" for sale take nonstandard forms; the PC's favorites were the cigars of bull's strength. I think they just liked the image of a cigar-chomping fighter whaling away on the enemies of goodness.

I use herbs to allow characters to break down the barrier and discuss things with spirits. This is done by a smoke lodge, which is represents both worlds. Its a ritual.

Burning herbs also acts as protection from some beast, much like stinking cloud spell. Wolfbane for Werewolves, Beladonna undead.
