All right, here's the scoop. If I want to make a summoner class (loosely based on the Final Fantasy summoner and Shining Force sorcerer), what's the best way to tweak the sorcerer to represent that?

I might consider giving them the ability to 'capture' defeated outsiders and summon them via a spell-like ability with limited uses per day, instead of doing it with spells.

Or, considering that certain FF games treated summons as one-off spell effects, just leave the sorcerer 'as-is' and tweak their spell descriptions to resemble summons. For example: Fireball doesn't create a projectile, it opens a portal onto Elemental Fire and an efreet pops out in front of the enemies, then showers them with flame, and vanishes. Admittedly, this doesn't suit all spells. You might want to prepare a special list including some cleric spells, as I recall some summons actually healed the party.

Just my 2gp. This could all be too much bother.

I would use the Summoning Individual Monsters rules in the DMG (pg 96.), and work with my DM to create a number of unique and interesting outsider and elemental creatures that you could summon as your Espers / Guardian Forces / Calls or whatever you'd like to call them.

Interesting note, however. A sorcerer class character that's built along the lines of a Caller would sorta indicate they had some kind of natural connection with the creatures they're summoning, yes? Demons can summon other demons, mefits can summon other mefits... you can summon these creatures.

Instead of Spells per Day, they could get Summons per Day. They would have the same SPD progression as the Sorc's Spells per Day. When you summon a creature, it's CR can be a max of 1/2 your class level (round down) + the level of the Summon slot you used. The durration is 1 round per level, and summoning takes a full round action. Using slots of level 4-6 takes 2 full round actions, and levels 7-9 take 3. The durration can be increased to 5 rounds per level if you cast the summon using a slot 2 levels higher, or 1 minute per level if you use a slot 4 levels higher.

Or something like that.
