One of my best campaigns setup that the players all came from the same small town and knew each other their whole lives. Even the "loner" rogue was onboard because the other PC has protected him from the village bullies. Each player wanted their moment with their parents whenever they returned home and bringing home their dead was great RP scenes. Sometimes the PC had fights with family who begged them not to go adventuring again. Part of what helped was in using Dragonbane, where your age impacts your stats amd skill spread. So the players saw their PCs as actual older teens/young adults. The game went so well that our current GM has done a similar set up. Even though we are all orphans, the couple raising us to be a traveling troupe are essentially our adopted parents and we consider the other PC our siblings. The youngest player at the table is the oldest, so we are giving him such silly grief. OTH: One of my worst players only ever ran an orphan who only "slept with hookers" and only dealt with whoever was giving him gold. Trying to introduce a long lost brother was me "being weird" and "Not roleplaying stuff." Digging deeper, he described "roleplaying stuff" as trying to walk across a giant chess board to not get shocked and pushing button in the right order. In other words, RP=classic dungeon puzzles and anything else was window dressing to get to the dungeon. We didn't even have to get rid of him as he left the game for Diablo, which he declared to be the perfect D&D game.
