"Perfect" Fits

Family

First Post
I know that the races have many more features than just their ability boosts but I did find that VERY few builds primary and secondary stats married up to those provided.

Ranged Rangers fit with Elves.
Dexterity Rogues fit with Halflings.
Fey Warlocks fit with Tieflings.

I found it odd. There are 4 races that give a boost to Charisma but only 1 that boosts Strength.

I'm wondering what fits PHBII will provided both in itself and matching its classes/races to the PHBI.

And for the record our Eladrin Fey Warlock, Dwarven Fighter, and Dragonborn Paladin keep up quite nicely to the Halfing "Cartographer" and the Elven Ranger.

Personally I found that the Dragonborn can fit in almost all the classes.

Maybe not straight into Fighter or Cleric.

Warlord, Paladin and Brutal Rogue definately.

Wizard notsomuch.

Warlock?

Yeah, many of the races fit certain class builds to a tee, based on ability bonuses.

Dragonborn - Battle Cleric, Fighter, Paladin, Feylock/Starlock, Inspiring Warlord.
Dwarf - Laser Cleric, Infernal Warlock
Eladrin - Wand Wizard, Tactical Warlord with heavy blades(less so, but still good fit)
Elves - Archer Ranger
Humans - anyone :p
Half-elves - Paladin, any Warlock
Halflings - Cha Rogue
Tieflings - Wizard, Feylock, (Warlord)

Even though Dwarves dont get a Str bonus, I still would say they "fit" fighter, just becuase both wisdom and con are both very good things for a fighter to have.

maybe to some lack of strength would disqualify them as a fighter fit, but I'm playing one now, and I love the build.

Yeah, Dwarves definitely do fit fighter, I agree. Especially with minor action second winds and Dwarven Weapon Training too. I just didn't put them in because they don't have a Str boost, and Str is the main attribute for fighters. I'm definitely not saying dwarves don't make good fighters (because they make great ones).

Humans aren't really a perfect fit to any class. They're good for any class, because they can always put a +2 in the attack stat, but they're really only a perfect fit for a class that /just/ needs it's attack stat really high, with secondaries being left modest being OK. Also, the human bonus at-will is crazy good for a few classes, wasted on most. Humans thus make great wizards (bonus at will is crazy-good, INT is the only stat that /really/ matters) or fighters (WIS and CON or DEX are good, but don't have to be /really/ high), but aren't ideal for split-stat classes that only have two good at-wills for your build (Cleric, Paladin, etc), or classes that benefit significantly from a high-as-possible secondary stat with many of thier powers (Warlord, Ranger, Warlock, etc).

If your looking for perfect fits, I think the dragonborn inspiring warlord is about as good as it gets.

But if we discount ability bumps for a second, there are still a lot of great fits.

Dragonborn make excellent fey or infernal warlocks. Cha bump for fey, and they get a HUGE healing surge value when combined with the power con of infernal warlocks.

I think dwarfs are the best fighters actually. Minor action healing surge is awesome, con bump is great, and the dwarven wep proficiency gives them the most damage (which is just going to get better when new superior axes come off the line).

Elves actually make solid fighters too with light blades. That elven reroll is just absolutely awesome, there's nothing like getting to reroll that critical daily I want to hit.

Minotaurs are great as DPS fighters due to their ability to wield large weapons and their str/con bonus.

Bugbears are perfect brutal scoundrels, with their str/dex bonuses.

Elves make excellent ranged clerics, with their dex/wis bonuses. They also make tempting choices for orb wizards, due to their encounter reroll ability and wis bonus.

The Genasi from FRCS gives +2str/int, and will mesh well with the tactical warlord and any gish wannabes.

Dwarven Weapon Training is only 1 damage more than Weapon Focus, so it only brings them up to par with human or dragonborn on damage per hit (while still being behind on chance to hit), and that's only in heroic tier, since DWT doesn't scale.

Though yes, once superior axes show up, a strict reading of DWT does give you proficiency in them as well as a damage boost, which is like getting an extra feat for free. (Though at epic it's possible that you'll end up wanting to take Weapon Focus anyway for the slightly higher damage bonus.)
