PH2: Immediate Magic

The PH2 immediate magic alternate class feature for (specialist) wizards cites the character's "Wizard Level" being used in DC calculations as well as some comparisons.

Since it doesn't say "Wizard Caster Level", it pretty much gimps most of the abilities if an early prestige class is chosen (Master Specialist from Complete Mage, for example.)

My question: How are other DMs handling this?

Since the ability becomes irrelevant power-wise at medium to high levels, I would choose whatever makes sense in the campaign.

Actually, many of those abilities stay good forever... some of them, depending on your build, can just get better and better...

Makes just as much sense as the rest of the things that work that way, for example:

Familiar and animal companion increases (specifically disallowed by most prestige classes)

Turn undead increase (also specifically mentioned by most prestige classes)

or things like requiring 4 levels of fighter class in order to take weapon specialization (there are a few prestige classes that specifically state they qualify to add to this level though).

Taking levels in a prestige class wouldn't advance your familiar's special abilities. As the immediate magic ability replaces your familiar, it's quite reasonable that taking levels in a prestige class doesn't advance this ability, either.

I would let it slide. Substitute caster level for wizard level.

Personally, I think I'll HR the original rule away too and let wizards with familiars use the caster level for familiar abilities instead of wizard level. Only one of probably dozens of wizards I've played, DM'd and played along with ever took a familiar. Maybe with the caster level change I'll see some more familiars in play.

Thanks,
Rich
