He went to a temple of Kossuth (fr setting) where they prepared to do the ritual on him. Something screwed up, and he was actually sorta absorbed into the inner plane! His &quot;lifeforce&quot; merged with one of a fire elemental. The priests of Kossuth managed to bring him back to Faerun, but the merge was permanent. Occasionally, the fire elemental takes control of the body, sometimes it's the Ash.</blockquote>
