We play with our own house rules from the American rules mixed with Brutal Bucaneers 3 rules (link below) and our own ideas. http://boardgamegeek.com/viewfile.php3?fileid=6008 We play that all damage to crippled ship is automatically healed for free to the starting position (skull and crossed swords second ring position) in pirate's cove (in addition to your choice of 2 gold and 1 tavern card or 2 tavern cards and no gold), and then you can spend up to 5 gold to upgrade any sections of your ship you want. This is because if you play otherwise, a defeat or two may cause you to fall so far behind the other players you will never win. This way, defeat is more of a temporary setback. We also play that all Legendary Pirates move randomly (roll 1d6 each turn for each legendary pirate), and if they land on your current island at the end of the turn, then you must fight them BEFORE you can leave that island on your next turn. This is to make the game more dangerous by ensuring more ship battles occur. As legendary pirates are sunk, new pirates appear (until all are sunk) in random positions. Yes, two legendary pirates can apear at the same island and you must fight both of them at the same time (but you can only fire on one of them until it is sunk). Believe it or not, I beat Captain Hook and Blackbeard this way! Of course, I was so weakened I was easily cripled by a rival player who went to the same island as me after my battle... Any defeat in battle brings -2 Fame to the loser.
