Most of my cosmologies are fairly boring and derivative. I prefer to keep the story focused on the material world, and I find most planar travel overrated. Bifold Model (1): Prime World and Spirit World. And done. Keep it safe and simple. It's the Avatar the Last Airbender model, and also the Dragon Age model. I use this model when I just want all "spirits" to be regarded as fae, angels, demons, devils, etc. Anything regarded "supernatural" has its primary roots here. Trifold Model (2): Prime World with Faerie/Positive/Spirit World and Shadow/Negative/Underworld. A stripped down World Axis. The "Berserk" Model (3): It is a five-plane vertical model. But this structure requires a bit more explanation, though you will see that it plays off Neo-Platonism. Imagine three spheres of being that roughly correspond to (A) Idea/Spirit/Mind, (B) Form/Astral/Soul, and (C) Physical/Material. These three spheres overlap and produce five interlocking, layered planes: #1 Abyss (A), #2 Vortex (A+B), #3 Nexus (A+B+C), #4 Interstice (B+C), #5 Physical/Prime (C). This cosmology operates along a principle rule that one's ego cannot traverse more than three planes total, and you will see why. But let us work backwards in terms of a moratal human person attempting to traverse the planes. (5) Physical: C only. The mortal realm of humans, standard creatures, etc. You live and die here. (4) Interstice: B+C. The immortal faerie realm, a physical world made immortal by its connection to Sphere B. Many fantastic beasts can be found here. (3) Nexus: A+B+C. It is the meeting point of all three spheres of being. This is commonly regarded by mortals as "the Underworld." It sits at the precipe between A and C. It is the highest plane that a mortal human can possibly traverse. To go beyond this point requires that the human person relinquish C, i.e. their material body. And this is where the transition of the fleshly body and the spiritual body transpires, as the soul journeys to its final destination. (4) Vortex: This is the "astral" realm of both heaven and hell (again, according to mortals), and likewise home to angels, fiends, and the elements. They are astral creatures without material bodies. Up to this point, we have focused on a human person, but mortals cannot reach the Vortex. So here we may note that angels and fiends will only traverse down to 3 and 4, as they cannot traverse down to the mortal realm without relinquishing their astral immortality. So humans will encounter angels and fiends only when humans are themselves in either (4) the "Faerie Realm" or (3) the "Underworld/Nexus." (5) Abyss: This is "God." It is the source and essence of everything. To traverse here is to surrender your everything, namely your form and ego. Angels and fiends alike revere the mysteries of the Abyss as their creator. The Abyss generates and consumes souls, life, spirit, etc.
