Preface this by saying I like the new Planescape book(s) though I find it a tad barebones. Now, I've been thumbing through the original box set stuff as I read though the new stuff and I know others disgree but it's tone is different. I mean yeah, Lady of Pain will still flay you etc but the way things are presented is just different. Easiest to notice is the lack of the Sigil "Cant" style of the language. It added color to the descriptions. I really really think the lack of Cant in the new stuff hurts the over all setting. It added flavor. Aside from being a ring shaped place with a bunch of portals, this could be Waterdeep. More or less, the new stuff just kind of lists things like a manual (which it is right) but the old stuff was kind if like reading a story. It had more "color". Again, I'm not saying the new stuff isn't descriptive it's just the old stuff was more so, and flowery. Thenew stuff may give more facts but it's not as descriptive, if that makes sense. Not to mention adding Torment into the mix which REALLY gave Sigil some color. It's one thing to read about a place and another to walk around in it while wondering what can change the nature of a man. Just IMO, really. If/When I run the new adventure I'm glad I have the old stuff and the old video game to fall back on so I can make the world pop.
