[QUOTE="Maxperson, post: 9183603, member: 23751"] It does add to the game, because a lot of folks like canon. That's a positive. What it doesn't do is add to the game to remove canon, because 1) those who like canon will be put off by it, which is a negative, and 2) nothing is solved by removing canon, because any conflicts between my personal game and what is put out won't be solved by the removal of the canon tag. Going back to the 3e Azoun example. It doesn't matter if they put out a new book detailing his heirs and what happens in the wake of his death and say that it isn't canon. It's still going to conflict with my personal canon that he is still alive. I'm still going to be faced with the choice of buying that product and trying to wrestle it to match my accounting, decide it isn't worth it and not buy the product, or decide that it's so fantastic that I kill off Azoun in my game and use that product's lore. What the removal of canon does do, is allow creators(including WotC) to contradict what came before and use the excuse, "There's no canon past the core three books!" That will save the creators time, and therefore money as they can complete their projects more quickly and then move on to the next one. They're trying to sell the change as something for us, but it's really for them and their bottom line, which is understandable, but still a negative for those of us who like canon. I don't think so. They could at any point, even with official canon, say that Mordenkainen finally decided to shave and is completely hairless up top, or that he shaved and grew hair. That doesn't contradict canon. It's a natural progression of canon. What canon are things like the fall of Netheril. It happened and is a virtually unalterable fact of the past hundreds of years gone. If they put out another product that Netheril never fell at all and simply continued on unabated to the present day Forgotten Realms, without some sort of time travel group preventing Karsus from doing his deed, it would be a contradiction of canon and a problem.
