Except they still let you buy the previous versions of the setting on the DMs Guild. The past versions of the setting still exist for you to use if you want to. The new books don't have to waste pages creating a dumb metaplot justifying every minor change to the setting. Would the 5e Ravenloft book really be any better if it made up some metaplot justification for its changes like Vecna breaking a Time-Travel Obelisk which caused some Dark Lords to change gender and other various changes? It's not about "respecting the past". I honestly do not even understand that phrase. You respect people, not the vague concept of "the past" or a setting/story. As I said before, it's not disrespectful to change parts of a setting or story. West Side Story isn't disrespectful to Shakespeare. Monty Python and the Holy Grail isn't disrespectful to all of the people who wrote/recorded the Arthurian legends. Spiderman: No Way Home isn't disrespectful to the One Day More storyline from the comics. You can dislike the changes that a new version of a story or setting has without pretending that it's about "respecting" the source material. You can enjoy new versions of a setting/story without being disrespectful of the source material. . . . That's still a thing. At least in the Forgotten Realms. Baldur's Gate 3 acknowledges the events that happened during Descent into Avernus and has a "canonical" ending to that adventure (one where Elturel is saved, but Zariel isn't redeemed). They might have "abandoned" or dialed back the metaplot for other settings, but it is very much still a thing (as much as I wish it wasn't).
