Edit: Sorry, I don't know whether replying to older threads is allowed here. I'm happy to see that Planescape is getting some material, but really bummed that my favorite faction was destroyed with no explanation. I can't imagine playing anything but a Godsman and now... I'll probably never get the chance. That's the thing about blowing up the setting (a la Faction War) or destroying player options. Anyone who wasn't lucky enough or old enough to play it before, will never ever get to experience the original setting. I doubt I'll ever get to play a Believer of the Source. And I don't understand why they would merge with the Sign of One (among my least favorite factions!) when their beliefs are absolute, total opposites. I'd sooner believe the Xaositechs joining the Harmonium just to confuse everybody, because at least being random is sort of in character for them. Like Micah, I hate retcons.
Occasionally it becomes necessary (for example, when you realize that Ravenloft has a giant racist middle finger to the Roma people in it... maybe you need to carefully rewrite that part). But retcons should be used like major surgery on a hemopheliac, as a last resort and cutting as little as possible. Not a wrecking ball at random. Worldbuilding consistency should be respected because the people who love the setting should be respected and not told that what they loved is garbage. Even if it contained something that we now realize is racist or sexist or something, the people who grew up loving the setting should not be shamed or told they're bad people for loving it. The people who wrote the setting should get some respect, too. Retcons and reboots mostly feel like letters of hate to the fans and past authors of what came before, and they make the new material useless to anyone playing in the original version. Sometimes they come with actual letters of hate like the latest "Werewolf: The Apocalypse" total reboot. When the Eberron designers didn't like the Great Wheel cosmology... they invented a whole new setting. When the Forgotten Realms writers didn't like the setting, they took a wrecking ball to it, over and over and over again. How many times has the Realms been blown to pieces and had its cosmology totally burned to the ground? If I was a FR fan I would have felt spat and shat upon. And now they've done that to Ravenloft and Spelljammer too... and I was just beginning to appreciate and like Spelljammer. :( Whether it's a total reboot or an in-setting apocalypse, it still feels crappy for many people who loved the setting. Setting and worldbuilding cosmology isn't the same as metaplot, though. You can have one without the other. Exalted never had metaplot but it did have an internally consistent setting for two editions, barring some unintended mistakes. The year is RY 768, the Empress disappeared 5 years ago, and your PCs are ready to conquer the world and remake it in their image*. Ex3 is a reboot and I really don't like that, but at least they admitted honestly that it's a reboot. *Or die trying, the Exalted have plenty of peer-level enemies.
