[QUOTE="Arkhandus, post: 1382710, member: 13966"] Hey all, here's a basic overhead map of what the new fortress/town by the river near Tillich's ruins will look like if and when it is completed. I'll start work on the current appearance of the place-in-construction soon, unless anyone here tells me beforehand that they want/need something to look different, be larger or smaller, or be arranged differently. Let me know if I should turn the orientation of the map, also (I think my meager Paint program can do that). The left side of the map is whatever side would be the more hostile side of the river, flanking the forest or whatever where the goblins mostly inhabit. The right side of the map contains the rebuilt town of Neues Tillich (or New Tillich if you prefer, or whatever). BTW, what's the river's name anyway? I forget.... The walls going over the river would be arches going over it, large enough for riverboats to pass under. The tops of the walls though wouldn't be arced. Iron gates or somesuch would slide sideways from both sides of each arch, barring the way when no ships are chartered to pass through, or when under attack, or whatever. Inside the fort, the river is flanked with a few docks for anchoring, loading, and unloading ships, from fishing skiffs to small warships, or whatever will fit in the river..... I have no idea how wide the river is, so base the scale of the walls and buildings on whatever width the river is supposed to be. Assume pillars support the bridge and walls/arches over the river, if need be. The bridge and main paths through the fort are intended to be at least wide enough to allow for one or more siege weapons to be moved around through the place, to where ever they're needed. The gray parts of the map are stone walls, except for the gray at the bridge which is the stone ramps leading up to the bridge (which of course is set high enough above the bridge to allow for ships to pass under). The maroon, brown, and tan parts are wooden planks, roofs, walkways, and such. The main wall, and the walls of each military building, are crenellated to provide cover for archers and siege crews. The main wall is surrounded, on the inner rim, with a high, firmly-supported wooden walkway where archers and siege crews are stationed to watch over the surrounding territory and alert the fortress commanders to any impending attacks. Of course, if that's too unrealistic, just assume the walkway is a more reasonable 5 or 10 feet wide, sufficient for archers to run around and position themselves. The square parts along the main wall are the gatehouses, which house some barracks, maybe reception halls, and maybe mess halls for the garrison, in addition to the multiple portcullises. Many of the military buildings (the ones which I've put a wooden-board pattern on the roof) are towers or have a tower built into them, for viewing over the wall and laying down further bowfire and artillery fire upon any invaders.
