Plants and class levels?

Can plants take class levels? I could find anything in the PHB or the Monster Manual. Personally, I would not allow it in a home game but I was looking for something definate from the D&D rules. I haven't checked the FAQ.

thanks

What they said. If it has an Int score of at least 3, it can take class levels. The ability to handle equipment would be handy, but is not strictly necessary (see celestial charger unicorn).

The most definite thing is whether the monster description says "Advancement: By character class" or not. I'm pretty sure you won't find any Plant creature that has that listed.

His question is whether they can take class levels. Which advancement doesn't answer. Even in the MM, there are quite a few creatures that have advancement: by HD but have superior versions listed who have been advanced with class levels. (E.g., mummy - mummy lord [mummy Clr10]).

My friend and I looked through the PHB and the MM but couldn't find anything forbidding a plant from having class levels. I was wondering if there was anything I was missing.

As Knight Otu said, a creature ought to have at least Int 3 (like a player character). Not sure if that's a rule but it's strongly encouraged, at the very least.
Other than that, go nuts. A plant is quite unlikely to have class levels but an exceptional one just might. A PC plant most definitely can have class levels, for that matter. (DMG, p. 172.) (Hey, a treant's ECL is listed so PC treants are supported by the MM. :) Same thing for shambling mounds.)
