Way back in the day, I used to own some plastic "dinosaur" toys that included some strange looking monsters. Well, when I started playing D&D as a youngster, I was surprised to find their pictures in the Monster Manual! It turns out Gygax used those toys as the inspiration for a few monsters, including the rust monster and umber hulk.
