Play by post arena-like games?

Perhaps you guys could help me with this. While trying to find some info on magic stacking rules, I happened to come across a forum post (from another site) that had characters fighting in an arena of some kind. It was like (I guess) playing d&d on a forum but then purely the battle side and virtually none of the roleplaying side. There were character sheets posted, a dm, small maps and everything. It looked quite fun :)

Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy roleplaying very much (and love some of the storyhours here) and get to play in a fun campaign almost every week, but I am also someone who enjoys making characters that work well mechanically speaking and doing well in combat.

This seemed like a good way to play like that, but I am having trouble finding other sites like it. My google-fu is probably weak, as I've spend a good hour or so trying to discover more places that offer this but all I've come up with is story hour-type games, not the arena-type games I'm currently looking for. Is there like a name for this type of thing? Is it well known? Anywhere I could find more info?

Thanks!

btw: For an example of what I mean by this post, check out this link for instance: http://www.goand.net/home/index.php...es=1&session=95415e5bae27c48dd8df10c80b2ebf84

I would love to see a gladitorial type PBP, where its not so much a tournemant but like an ongoing ladder. I know Sands of Death by Mongoose has rules for this type of campaign.

Ahhh... someone inquiring about the Ol' Games O' Death! :)

They were a neat part of the board's history : AFAIK, we were one of the first to organize and play them.
While they all failed ultimately in their own ways, it was a spectacular experiment.

Currently, I believe the most Gladitorial games are here: http://rpol.net/?show=Arena&date=1100014889
They started coming on strong while the last GoD stalled.

Basically, the gist of high-level (15th level+) id that it doesn't work. It's almost impossible to adjudicate, and WotC doesn't have clarifications on the many powerful combinations that players can put together. It's too much of a chore to make sense of their rules holes.
At least that's how I remember it - anyone else's experiences is welcome.

Here's seasong's wesite detailing some action, etc rom the last GoD: http://seasong1.tripod.com/hethasgambit/
Here's an earlier thread you're welcome to peruse (if you dare) ;) It has links IIRC to the previous GoD's: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=44231&page=1&pp=20
