Minor report: I just ran my test party through the gargoyle fight at the entrance with 4 gargoyles instead of 1. It was satisfactorily non-boring. The (virtual) PCs spotted the gargoyles on the roof, decided to smash the statues from "long range" "just in case", and hit two statues and one real gargoyle. The next thing they know, the gargoyles are upon them. (Lesson one: gargoyles are fast, and 120' is not really long range.) The PC who hit a real gargoyle (bardlock) knows he's the main target so he dodges, moon druid turns into a giant constrictor snake, and the PCs kill one gargoyle and seriously wound another, at which point the two remaining gargoyles switch tactics and try to grapple the wizard and the bardlock and lift them into the air. The bardlock avoids the grapple, but the wizard gets grappled and hoisted into the air before someone can shoot the gargoyle out of the air (wizard takes 9 falling damage from being 20 feet up). Final gargoyle tries to flee but gets shot down by magical artillery. The vPCs will be nervous about heading into the manor now instead of blase, because they are down some minor resources (HP and spell points) instead of still at full, and they don't know what's actually inside. All in all, a very satisfactory improvement on the original encounter.
