Today I played a couple of "storygames" online, with @thefutilist and (in one of them) @Manbearcat. The first (with three players) was Mobile Frame Zero: Firebrands:
The year is SC 0245. Humanity has spread through the Milky way, using interstellar transit gate technology to colonize the galaxy. Mobile frames are the hard-working, hard-fighting combat- and labor mecha they’ve brought with them. You are romantic ace mobile frame pilots, caught up in an undeclared war for the future of the Bantral system. Fight with your friends. Ally with your rivals. Fall in love with your enemies. MOBILE FRAME ZERO: FIREBRANDS is a casual roleplaying game by D. Vincent Baker and Meguey Baker, set in Joshua A.C. Newman’s MOBILE FRAME ZERO universe.
The other (two player) was Showdown:
Showdown is a roleplaying game about two people who are locked in a struggle that can only end with the death of one of them. It’s for two players and should take between 60 and 90 minutes to play. Over the course of play, you and your opponent will be fighting over two things: the outcome of a climactic duel between these two foes and the history that led them to that duel. Win the duel, and you get to choose who lives and who dies. Control the history, and you get to shape why they fought in the first place. How did it come to this? Who’s the hero? Who’s the villain? And who’s standing when the dust settles?
I enjoyed both games, but Showdown was definitely more intense. So we played in the right order. Both systems are "GM-less": there are reasonably clear rules about who gets to frame scenes, and how those scenes are resolved. In both systems, being faithful to the fiction, and maintaining its integrity, is important.
