point-buy for cohorts/familiars/animal companions?

Given the fact that many games use a point-buy system for PC stats, shouldn't a player be able to design his character's cohort's or familiar's or animal companion's (or whatever's) stats using point buy?

If you are in a high-power campaign; I would hope that a druid in a 32 stat point campaign would have a stronger wolf than one in a campaign using 25 points. After all, the DM normally throws tougher challenges vs. the 32-pointers, right?

Our game uses a very high powered stat system for PCs (80+1d6 total stat points, spread 1-for-1 however you like, no stat below 8 before racial adjustment). Cohorts get 32 points using normal point buy.

Animal companions and familiars just use the base animal stats, and then increased as written in the appropriate class descriptions.

I do give such creatures a higher stat array. However, the player does not create the character. If I am feeling particular creative I will create multiple ones and then allow the character to use his skills and assess which one he wants.

As a DM I would say no to the familiar and animal companion. They're already statted out and they're just animals so they're not supposed to be specialized in any way the way I see it.

Cohorts should use the same stat generation method as NPCs. In my games, that would be exactly the same point-buy as the players.
