Point me to Anime

First Post
Well a couple of years ago, I would have told anyone that I did not like anime at all. I would barely give it a chance because Dragonball Z, Gundam, and Pokemon did not interest me at all. However as of recently, I've sat down and enjoyed several series of anime. Anime like Beserk, Samurai 7, any film by Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away), Cowboy Bebop, and my all time favorite: Rurouni Kenshin and the Samurai X films.

I'm interested to see whats out there now. So if anyone can offer up a good series I would be more than glad to give it a chance.

Series wise there is the D&D inspired series Record of Lodos War and my favorite Vampire Pricess Miyu recently Helsing and Witch Hunter Robin were good.

Movie wise there is the classic Vampire Hunter D and Ghost in the Shell (I thought the first was better than the second). I also liked Ninja Scroll

I thought both seasons of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex were pretty good, although I personally liked the first season better.

I'm currently watching Ergo Proxy the series is set on a dystopian world and its one of those series which could had easily devolved into a monster of the week sort of series, but some how it managed to escape that fate.

Even though you mentioned it as a negative, I have to re-mention the various Gundam series.

Especially the original stuff...Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam especially. Its pretty much anime's Star Wars.

Another vote for Ghost in the Shell :Stand Alone Complex. Both seasons are excellent. Wasn't quite so fond of the recent movie "Solid State Society".

You might like "Full Metal Alchemist". It's an interesting take on magic, the price of power and has some great characters. Series seems pretty light weight when it starts out, but there is some REALLY Dark stuff in there.

Hellsing Ultimate is one I can definitely recommend. There is also an older 4 volume animated adaptation that's just called "Hellsing", it's not quite as well done, but does have a great sound track.

Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust, is very good.

Gantz is something you might want to check out. Two teens are "killed" rescuing a homeless man, only to reapear in a room with a number of other strangers who were also "rescued" from death. A mysterious black sphere "Gantz" informs them that if they want to live they'll have to play a game...

You might want to check out the "Battle Angel Alita" manga series.

It's live action rather than animated, but I think "Battle Royal" might be up your alley. There's a translation of the novel available as well.

It's not anime per se, but "Invader Zim" is hysterically funny.

I have to second Fullmetal Alchemist. It's a very good show. I haven't seen all that much of it, but some of the villains are twisted gits.

I also personally like Inuyasha. It may be a bit too anime-like, though.

The various Ghost in the Shell series are good choices as well.

I'm not a fan of Anime.

I would except from this general dislike Ninja Scroll (the first one). That's a pretty good movie.

I thought Ghost in the Shell was highly overrated. I expected a lot more for the buzz. It didn't hold a candle to Ninja Scroll , imo.

Ghost in the Shell the Movie is a considerably different kettle of fish than the Stand Alone Complex TV series. Mamoru Oshii did the movie and he likes philosophical talk fests.

Ninja Scroll was pretty and had a lot of flashy violence, but was a pretty empty film.

He's also the most boring director I've ever come across. I absolutely can't stand those lengthy pauses in his work that fans somehow pass of as deep and meaningful. Anyway, like Rackhir said, don't bother with the movies and stick with the Stand Alone Complex series instead.

Another recent anime I'd recommend is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Brilliant and hilarious show, once you get pass the odd ordering of the episodes.
