Another vote for Ghost in the Shell :Stand Alone Complex. Both seasons are excellent. Wasn't quite so fond of the recent movie "Solid State Society". You might like "Full Metal Alchemist". It's an interesting take on magic, the price of power and has some great characters. Series seems pretty light weight when it starts out, but there is some REALLY Dark stuff in there. Hellsing Ultimate is one I can definitely recommend. There is also an older 4 volume animated adaptation that's just called "Hellsing", it's not quite as well done, but does have a great sound track. Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust, is very good. Gantz is something you might want to check out. Two teens are "killed" rescuing a homeless man, only to reapear in a room with a number of other strangers who were also "rescued" from death. A mysterious black sphere "Gantz" informs them that if they want to live they'll have to play a game... You might want to check out the "Battle Angel Alita" manga series. It's live action rather than animated, but I think "Battle Royal" might be up your alley. There's a translation of the novel available as well. It's not anime per se, but "Invader Zim" is hysterically funny.
