Just curious to see who here has read & liked the works of the late Mr. Leiber. If you are (or aren't), please say why.

As for me, the 1st ed. Deities & Demigods made me aware of his stuff. Got me to pick up the books, & not long afterward, the setting materials. :)

It would be cool to see a 3e version of Lankhmar/Newhon.

One thing that always bugged me about the old versions is that 1st Ed and 2nd Ed were SOOO magic item-centric and Newhon was a low magic world....with the advent of 3e and the focus on skills and feats, I'm betting that that Lankhmar would work better than ever!

I voted for OK, but that's based around a lack of exposure leading to a lack of opinion. I only ever picked up two of his books as part of a buy-one-get-one-free kind of deal, and although they interested me I never got around to picking up more.

Did use all the Lanhkmar gods from 2e legends and lore though...

just got done reading the second release from white wolf, "thieves house"....man there are some good titles in there. anything to do with the thieves guild of lankhmar is just awesome.

leiber's writing is second to none, too. not a single word is wasted. sadly, many current authors could have learned a lesson or two from him.

That's the saddest things with authors these days getting paid by the word.
A wasted word today would be a word that was not included after editeng, so that they got no money for it.

And a long text is not better than a shorter text.

I'll try to quote Goethe, but apologize if I do not remember it correctly:

"Today, dear friend, I write you a long letter, as I do not have the time to write you a short one."

That said, to get back on topic, d20 Newhon would be very nice!

Hmm. Very few "heck no!" votes besides mine. I shall have to explain.

First, if you could check more than one box, I'd also have checked that I only know his Lankhmar stuff. Just for the record. Also, if there had been a box between "heck no!" and "he's just okay," I'd have checked that.

Some of his early Lankhmar stories are actually pretty decent. About halfway through, though, the series really took a turn for the worse. And that final Lankhmar story--the one where Grey Mouser is trapped underground--is just about one of the worst pieces of poorly written, cheap softcore porn excuses for a fantasy story I have ever read in my life. Even if I'd thought the series was perfect up to that point--which I didn't--he'd have lost respect for that story alone.

Those of you who are just now picking these stories up, I suggest you stop at book three or four. You'll be a lot happier in the long run. (IMHO, of course.)

Lieber's work was some of the first material i read that showed me that fantasy didn't have to be boring, tolkien-like regurgitation. I love his work and its unique strangeness is its strongest asset.
