And if he needs to fly, or teleport or planeshift or any other of a number of myriad things that a wizard can do easily by late game? If it can't be solved by hitting it with a sword, the Fighter doesn't have anything he didn't have in the early game, except for magic items he may have found. A hammer is a very versatile tool if everywhere you go you find nothing but nails. The fighter is balanced with the wizard in combat. Assuming that the combat takes place somewhere flight isn't an issue, assuming that the number of enemies are not to great to make single target damage inneffective (so less than 10 really). assuming that the fighter has found a magic weapon to allow him to damage him things etc. I think people seriously fail to understand how a lot of the criticism of the Fighter in 3rd edition was never really addressed. This was the definition of Tier 4 in 3rd edition: "Tier 4: Capable of doing one thing quite well, but often useless when encounters require other areas of expertise, or capable of doing many things to a reasonable degree of competence without truly shining. Rarely has any abilities that can outright handle an encounter unless that encounter plays directly to the class's main strength. DMs may sometimes need to work to make sure Tier 4s can contribute to an encounter, as their abilities may sometimes leave them useless. Won't outshine anyone except Tier 6s except in specific circumstances that play to their strengths. Cannot compete effectively with Tier 1s that are played well." Fighters were Tier 5 then so they've moved up a little.
