The sorcerer is a good fit for people who want to play the dragon guy (and red dragon bloodline makes a really good devil bloodline), the shadow guy, the chaos guy, etc.  That gimmick is attractive to new and casual players, who, based on WotC's actions with 5e, are the primary target audience for 5e.  It makes for a nice multiclass, since most of the other charisma classes benefit from more spell slots.</blockquote>
