Polymorph any Object

First Post
So I am playing a sorc in a short campaign who just hit 16th level. He is a transmuter/necromancer and will orbably take polymorph any object as his 8th level spell. I haven't played a lot of spell casters (especially 16th level).

So the question I have is what are the nuances of this spell? According to the text only objects get saving trows or spell resistance, so can the caster say, turn a great wyrm dragon into a turd for 20 minutes with no save or SR allowed? Or am I missing something (probably)?

Regardless it seems like a good utility spell for a transmuter.

Thanks for clarification.

'(object)' (under Save) does not mean only objects get a save. It means, objects can be targeted. ;)

(object): The spell can be cast on objects, which receive saving throws only if they are magical or if they are attended (held, worn, grasped, or the like) by a creature resisting the spell, in which case the object uses the creature’s saving throw bonus unless its own bonus is greater. (This notation does not mean that a spell can be cast only on objects. Some spells of this sort can be cast on creatures or objects.) A magic item’s saving throw bonuses are each equal to 2 + one-half the item’s caster level.

I always assumed creatures got SR and a save too. But now looking at the spell in the SRD, you're right it does put into parenthesis object which I find very strange. I'd still give creatures saves and SR too.

Thanee is correct, (object) means objects can be targeted. Unattended Non magical objects don't get a save, but magic ones do (they will usually fail if unattended). Attended items get the save of the creature who is holding it.

Turning the dragon into a turd, the dragon gets a save. Turning a turd into a dragon of opposed color however there is no save involved. I think that there is a 15 HD limit though, from the 'as polymorph except' section. Also note to use the Erratta versions of the spell, they have changed since release.

It is an incredible utility spell, especially for a sorcerer. It can be used to duplicate Baleful Polymorph, Polymorph, Transmute x to x and Flesh&Stone spells. That many spells known you don't need to keep. Unless you plan on casting them alot and want to use the lower spell slot.
