Polymorphic Aura

This thread might belong over in Natural 20 Press Forum, but I wanted to run it by the folks who read this forum.

Polymorphic Aura (from Ranger Wickett's Wild Magic, also referred to in Tournaments, Fairs and Taverns) is like Polymorph Self except:

- no healing occurs with the shift of form
-it can be cast on another as well as on one's self
-it allows one's form to be changed every round (like the old, unerrated Polymorph Self)

Duration is the same as Polymorph Self, it is under the control of the subject, and so on, and so on. Specifically, it is a 4th level arcane spell.

Now the Balance Nazi inside me says that Polymorphic Aura should be higher than 4th level. Or have some other limitations (10 minutes per level instead of 1 hour per level, or something).

Well, it sounds clearly better than polymorph self or other. So I have to go along with you here... all you lose (far as I can tell) is that little bit o' healing.

I'd say 5th level? Or reduce the duration, like you say.

I was simply of the mind that Polymorph Self was balanced before WotC errata'd it. The only thing that really made mine different from that version is that you don't heal, and that you can cast it on others (a complaint I always had against Polymorph Self, why couldn't you cast it on your buddies?).

It was also necessary to have a spell that could work with the magical competition from TFT, and I figured that it was as powerful or useful a spell as, say, Teleport or even Polymorph Other.
