D&D 3E/3.5 Poor soul without 3.5 info (Druid question)

I don't have a copy of the 3.5 rules (noy sure I want them...)

How exactly does a druid's animal companion progress? Is it similar to the wizard's or sorcerer's familiar?

Go here and search for "Animal Companion" for the full set of rules. It's a little too complicated to summarize: although it's vaguely similar to the rules for familiars, there are significant differences that make the companion a better combatant.
