Power level compromise?

I've noticed a trend in our group. Some people prefer lower levels, while other like higher levels of play (this character level, not necessarily low v. high magic or anything like that). I don't DM any games currently but I wonder when and if I do how to handle this and make sure that the players don't get bored or frustrated. Any ideas?

Hmmmmm.

This is two very different styles of play. It's not as big a deal as half of them liking fantasy and the other half likeing sci-fi, but it's pretty important.

In a case like this, I'd go high-level and just try to have a really involving story with lots of challenging combats, which you should be doing anyway, but there's less room to fudge in a case like this.

Do both. Either get someone to run a second game and alternate, or create side adventures to explore the level range not addressed in the main game.

For example, if the main characters are high level, perhaps the group could occasionally play out side stories relating to their minions, or have a scenario giving a ground level view of events that the characters initiate. On the other hand, low characters might hear news of high level NPCs, and then the players get to play out the legendary paladin's dragonhunt or whatever.
