[PR 2WS] Masters of Arms on Sale Now

2WS-Steve

First Post
October 2, 2002-HIGHLAND PARK, NJ: Masters of Arms, the first print publication from Second World Simulations, arrived in retail outlets today. Masters of Arms “adds a new idea to the D20 mix by means of combinations and showcases how to use that idea in thirty prestige classes that often wield unusual weapons…” [ENWorld Staff Reviewer, Joe G. Kushner]. Jeff Ibach of Game-Play news says “Here then, is that next step in the d20 rules revolution." And ENWorld Staff reviewer Alan “Psion” Kohler gives Masters of Arms 5 out of 5 stars, an accolade reserved for just 20 of the 134+ products he’s reviewed.

Owner Steve Peterson said “I’m extremely proud to have Second World Simulations first printed product garner such a positive reception. I’ve been wanting to add hyper-action fighting options to my campaign for years now and the d20 system has given me the opportunity to make that happen.”

Congrats Steve!

(ahem... pardon my french but..)
This is one nice book of kicking ass. When I frist read about it and then looked at the samples, I was certainly mostly unimpressed by the overall feel I got for it. But then holding a copy in my hands and reading it, this book is THE book that finally makes fighting styles that work. A series of feats and/or prestige classes for wicked combat maneuvers. Enough to make me consider having my cleric character pick up a few non-clerical levels, just to be able to do crazy-ass stuff with his fave weapon.

And Steve has built up a basic formula for all this that maintains a fine balance that manages to make these weapon specialist prestige classes on par with fighters of equivalent level (I know, a lot of it is based on the formula instead of strictly by the formula, but it still shows that the formula was good).

Don't be surprised to see material based on these mechanics and rules appearing in other books I write... it is OGC that inspires me on almost the same level as the Prestige Races from Bastion's Oathbound setting.

Soon to be 19. I just ran one of the adventures I rated a 5 last night, and, well, it's not quite as good as it looks. :)

Yes, Master of Arms is very much the type of Prestige Class supplements I have been looking for. :)

Thanks Jason and Psion!

Jason, I'm glad you like the ideas enough to think about expanding on them; I'm looking forward to seeing them. I think there's a lot of stunts that one could develop and, Like Joe said, it'd be nice if players had a wider range of choices. Few if any of the maneuvers employ magical powers and I think once you toss those in the number of permutations skyrockets.

On a side note, the other night I threw 2 Power Axe Fighter minotaurs and 2 Feral Ravager (from Librum Equitis vol. I by Ambient Ent. for any passers-by) minotaurs at my poor uber-munchkin player. He got awfully sulky not being able to move, getting pounded on, and constantly having to weigh the value of his +1 shield of speed against the value of his dwindling hit points. Then his min-maxed cleric dropped the crowd with a Greater Command spell; so it goes.

One nice thing about playing with munchkins is that I never feel the need to keep the kid gloves on... Anyway, I sorta felt like Ambient and I double-teamed the rat.
