Metal Gods is a 72 page sourcebook dedicated to incorporating robots, androids, and other forms of artificially intelligent life into campaigns on the Twisted Earth. The book begins with a look at the evolution of robotics in the alternate history of the Darwin's World setting. It blends elements of science fact with science fiction to create a vision of a pre-Fall world that was virtually run by robotic life so that man could pursue aesthetic philosophies and a carefree style of life. The evolution of more advanced designs to meet the decadent needs of mankind, the growing degeneracy of human culture, and the birth of true AI all lead to the culmination of a world where man has grown detached and surrenders common sense to near-legendary folly - folly that brought the world to ruin.
In addition to describing the progression of robots from mere automatons to fully sentient beings, Metal Gods also touches briefly on the causes for the Fall and the after effects of this great catastrophe. The book creates a vision of a world that is only now stumbling to rise against tremendous environmental dangers and total chaos, an environment in which robotic life is beginning to awaken and rise to the fore. And in case players and GMs aren't quite satisfied with the history and background suggested in Metal Gods, there are also a few alternatives for toning down the grimness of this past and the bleak future history has in store for Darwin's World.
Metal Gods continues the theme of robotics with rules for creating androids as player characters, along with a flavorful system for incorporating design defects and gradual deterioration, and a selection of no less than 20 android-specific feats (from built-in weaponry to advanced targeting computers). There are also three new prestige classes for androids (and one for their organic "servitors"); there is the assassin android, a creation of the growing android armies that disguises itself as human or mutant to infiltrate wasteland communities and bring them to ruin; the android mastermind, a form of android that with its advanced age has developed an unnaturally intelligent and charismatic form of AI; the child of the metal gods, a pathetic human or mutant worshipper of these steel "deities", driven by fanaticism to wage war for their masters; and the Foundationist android, an android reactivated for the sole purpose of helping rebuild the culture, society, and civilization of the Ancients.
In addition to rules for making androids as characters, Metal Gods defines the various levels of artificial intelligence, gives rules for playing "wild" or "berserk" robots, and has game statistics for 18 different androids, robots, and programmed automatons from before the Fall. Metal Gods also introduces a new template, the cyborg, with two specific examples of how the template can be applied to existing creatures to make half-organic, half-machine monstrosities.
The final section of Metal Gods gives a short sampling of some high-technology items that are often found in the possession of the so-called "metal gods", from remote-controlled animatrons to cyborg sustenance tubes, as well as items used against androids during the last days of the Fall.
Lastly, Metal Gods offers some adventure material for game masters. Included are several adventure hooks for low, mid, and high level campaigns well as a fully detailed a mini-adventure.
