Prayer for a new cover

First Post
I just hope 3.5 will STOP the desaster started by 3e (and imitated by 50% of the various D20 publishers). I hope we won't have anymore hideous kitschissim cover. No more fake plastic jewel, please. Alas, if the MM2  is a step in 3.5 direction, I'm really afraid. The forgotten realms line have decent covers, I just hope WotC will make something for the core line.

Not to be rude or anything, but you have got to be kidding.
I would much rather have a totally obnoxious cover on a book filled with great information on game play, balanced characters, and clear explanations of rules than a beautiful cover without all that stuff.
I recall some people complaining about the cover when 3e came out, hey if you buy the books just to look at the cover, you really need to spend your money elsewhere. Besides WotC has said that the information in the new books will be released to the SRD at the same time. So if you don’t like the cover just download the SRD and you will be all set.
This goes back to the old saying "You can't judge a book by its cover."

This thread makes me long for the ‘Ranger got the shaft’ threads. ;)

Yeah! Er...

What's a "kitschissim"? Is this french for costume jewelry or something like that? :D

Kitsch-issime. Very Kitsch. I thought such construction will exist (or at least be understood) in english. It's a latin root (I think) used as a superlative, like in the italian fort-issimo.
In french, it is often used to imply something exagerated. What would be the equivalent in english ? There must be one ?

Yes, I'm kidding, but a good cover is nice too. And WotC set the standard : how many clone of the core rule book cover have we see in the last three years ? If 3.5 is sober and of good taste, they will be imitated, and gamers will need less to hide their books from non-players eyes. Seriously, what would you think, if you had never heard of RPG of someone with BovD, MMII and, says some avalanche press cover in his library ?

i actually liked the BoVD cover, and thought the MM2 cover was better than MM.

but you're right, then FR stuff is beautiful looking. and i'd rather read a beautiful book than an ugly one.

Ah -- ok. We engloids would probably say "kitschy" ( adj. meaning vulgar or in bad taste ( if we had a good vocabulary - unlike myself apparently! ) - a completely appropriate word in the context, Alo!

I'd be into seeing a different look too. A change of pace would be refreshing.

What i've heard most is the german "Uber" placed before the word, like "Uber-Kitschy". Sometime you hear a more latinesque "Ultra."

I've liked the 3E covers since day one. Here's hoping they don't change them much, if at all. That said, a cover is nice eye candy but I'm more concerned with what's inside at the end of the day.

One Person's Kitsch is another man's fresh air. :)

I love the freakin' covers, and if I were to change anything, it would be to make a different cover but in the exact same style! Frankly, the "piece of fantasy art splattered on the cover" look was grating on my nerves after looking at it for twenty years.

Über-kitschy, I like it, I think, it's how the core line is for me.
It seems that my point of vue is not universally shared, however... (and that's a good thing, I think)

Well, to be exact, I haven't such a problem with the DMG (Nice blue). But I don't like the PHB and dislike the MM, and worst the MMII... We will have to wait, I think.

Is it possible to make something consensual without being commonplace/boring ?

I would like to see something both stylish (so you won't walk with geek sign when holding the book) and somewhat mysterious/oniric, so that you may just look at your book and dream about magic worlds. So, an illo, not an abstract cover, I think.
