Louis Porter Jr. Design, in association with Devil’s Workshop, is proud to announce that they will be releasing the Prestige Class Creation Cookbook. The Only Pointed Based Prestige Class Creation System for d20! Prestige Classes are an essential part of D20, and one of the most exciting features for players to mull over when planning their characters. But the prestige classes you can find in a book aren’t always exactly what a player or a GM thinks fits in with a character concept, or campaign world. Enter the Prestige Class Creation Cookbook - intended as a guideline for creating brand new prestige classes. Creating a Prestige Class is great fun for many GMs, but it can also be a fun event for players. Giving players some game background, and then turning them loose with this book can produce some interesting and highly tailored results, allowing players to fulfill their unique character ideas.

These sourcebook contains everything you need to create variations on your favorite prestige class to all new, all different prestige class ideas that no one has seen before. If you like creating new prestige class for d20 gaming but wished there were rules that actually made sense, you prayers have been answered. OK I just finished the layout on this and sent off review copies to the writing staff who have been sending back all kinds of comments of things to add, remove and modifiy. I think this PDF will be out some time this month and a Print version of it available some time in October / November. So say tuned...

Hmmm... Maybe. Maybe we will show yout the HUGE chart where we break down all the spells in the SRD into point cost? OR maybe we will show you a comparision to our point based prestige class system with an already established SRD created Prestige Class? Just tell me what you might like to see in the preview. So far I think this one is going to be a nice addition to our Race Creation Cookbook. I think most games and GMs will find the both book very useful.

I would like to see a comparison between point based and established, this is the deciding factor for me. I was already looking at writing a program for me to use the Race Cookbook information to automate and allow for easier selections during race creation. If this PrC book turns out on par, then I am a sold customer..

I'll buy it.

A little more FYI on the Prestige Class Creation Cookbook:

We have stated out roughly 8 of the Prestige Classes in the DMG and SRD and they come to fall in line for the amount need to create Prestige Classes. So for all you who want to make sure this point system we have build does actually work, now here is your chance.

PS: Here a quote from an e-mail the writer sent me about the Prestige Class Creation Cookbook that I thought everyone should read:

"I also statted out 10 levels of cleric - it's worth more than any of the prestige classes in the DMG. I guess that's what they mean by CODzilla (cleric or druid)."

Well I just got back the round of corrections and we have to re-layout the book, so you can expect to see this project very soon, most likely by the end of the month. But here is a preview of what you can expect to see in full detail in Prestige Class Creation Cookbook.

PS: These are the overviews of the classes, NOT the detailed breakdown which can be found in the Prestige Class Creation Cookbook.

Comparing the Standard Prestige Classes
Below are a few examples to provide an idea of relative power levels via point buy. The highly specific class features of the Thaumaturgist, Horizon Walker, and Red Wizard have been omitted.

Arcane Archer Total Cost: 55.5. One of the weakest classes available, if you want to be an archer you’re better off going straight ranger.

Arcane Trickster Total Cost: 78 or 97. Either decent or good, depending on how you get into it.

Assassin Total Cost: 72. Not all that impressive, the spell list is the real savior of the assassin.

Blackguard Total Cost: 87 maximum. Powerful fighting class that mixes resilience with damage output, can be reduced in cost with restrictions.

Duelist Total Cost: 66 points. Can’t really cause damage but winds up with a giant AC. Not everyone’s cup o tea but good at what it does.

Dragon Disciple Total Cost: 101 or 99 for characters with a 20 speed. The giant strength boost is the chief offender, which actually more than offsets the mere ¾ bab, while providing extra damage. Very powerful for offensive builds.

Mystic Theurge Total Cost: 74. The lost spell levels hurt, a lot. This class looks good on paper but winds up much weaker than you’d think. Actually costed less than a wizard, and much less than a cleric.

And a few more:

Dwarven Defender: 76, Eldritch Knight: 75

And a 5 level one:

Archmage Total Cost: 51

For Reference:

First 10 levels of Cleric Total Cost: 117. Clerics are crazy. Maybe not druid crazy, but still way out there on the power scale.

This sounds quite interesting. Is there a preview available?

Finally now that I have done all the layout work, and as we wait for the cover to be finished here is a little preview of the Table of Contents, so you can see what is in the the Prestige Class Creation Cookbook. The last item in the table of contents is the Master List. It is the Master List each and every spell in the SRD with the point cost of them. Enjoy.
