Prestige Class Spell Progression

I'm currently designing a prestige class for the cleric class. I don't want the spell progression to continue at one spellcasting level increase per prestige class level, nor do I want it to be half that.

What I'm aiming at achieving is something like 6 or 7 spellcasting level increases over the range of the 10 level prestige class, and I was wondering how people around here would arrange those increases over the ten levels.

Do you go for a random selection or try to space them evenly? Are there any prestige classes out there that do similar things? I know the Elemental Savant has 9 levels, but is there anything out there with 6-8 increases?

Thanks

I would increase them evenly. If there were 6 increases, I'd have them at all but levels 1, 4, 7, and 10. If there were 7 increases, I'd have them at all but 2, 5, and 9.

If your players are inclined to class dip I would try to avoid both +1 Caster level at level 1 and a nice new ability. But other than that spread out as much as possible, preferably with the main class abilities appearing on non caster levels. This seems to, or IMHO should be, fairly standard class making practise.

Thanks for the replies so far. They've been very useful indeed. I think I'm going to opt for a 7 level spellcasting level progression, with the main prestige class feature coming in on the levels where the spellcasting class does not progress. There is indeed a +1 at 1st level, but the ability there is essentially the acquisition of the 'Domain Focus' feat from Complete Divine. It only applies to the Magic domain, since the class is based around that. Too much to prevent class dipping?

Yes, there are several prcs out there with odd progressions like that. I am playing a planeshifter (MotP); I've had to sacrifice a couple of levels of spellcasting for it, but it's worth it.

OK, here's an interesting question. Just how much is a spellcasting level worth? What would you trade for it? Would you trade a feat for it? Two feats?

It comes up when trying to balance PrC with spellcasting progression. You want to ensure that taking the PrC is not a no-brainer above the base class or at least that's how I view it. So when you want to balance spellcasting levels against other abilities, how do you do that?

In the prestige class I'm developing, the PrC gets Domain Focus, and Domain Spontaneity? Is this worth one spellcasting level? Two?

Thanks for the input.

Balancing caster levels is definitely an art, not a science. Depending on all the specifics, I'd say domain spontaneity is almost certainly worth one caster level (at least), and I'm not sure offhand what domain focus is. Maybe if you posted a preliminary version of the class...?

OK, here it is. Note that I believe this Prestige Class is unbalanced in the powerful sense, and I wish to tone it down. Any thoughts would be appreciated. The logical thing to do, I suppose is drop the spellcaster progression to 5 for the ten levels, but even then... :)

9th +6 +3 +3 +6 Improved Metamagic Faith, Arcane Counterspelling 3/week +1 level in existing class
10th +7 +3 +3 +7 Arcane Faith Mastery +1 level in existing class

Spells: Additional spellcasting levels gained by the Faith Wizard can
only be applied to the class that gives the Faith Wizard access to the
Magic domain.

Domain Focus: The Magic domain becomes an inherent part of the Faith
Wizard's faith, thereby allowing the Faith Wizard to cast spells from
the Magic domain at +1 caster level. For purposes of determining the
effective level for the Magic Domain's granted power, Faith Wizard
levels count as wizard levels.

Metamagic Faith: The Faith Wizard gains the ability to enchance an
arcane spell from a spell trigger or spell completion item by a
metamagic feat and cast it as an arcane spell. The Faith Wizard must
sacrifice a divine spell slot to enhance the arcane spell, equivalent to
or greater than the level of arcane spell cast modified by the
particular metamagic feat.

The Faith Wizard need not possess the metamagic feat to use this
ability. The Faith Wizard choses two metamagic feats when gaining this
ability for the first time, and can apply these metamagic feats to an
arcane spell completion or spell trigger item. The level modifier of any
particular metamagic feat chosen in this manner cannot be higher than
half the Faith Wizard's class level (Heighten Spell can be chosen at any
time). Every time the Faith Wizard gains additional uses of Metamagic
Faith (at 5th and 8th level), the Faith Wizard gets to choose two more
feats that apply to this ability.

Domain Spontaneity: At 3rd level the Faith Wizard gains the ability to
spontaneously cast spells from the Magic domain similar to the way in
which clerics casts spontaneous cure or inflict spells. The Faith Wizard
can't use her domain slot for this ability. The Faith Wizard must still
provide the required spell components, focus and XP requirements when
casting a spell in this manner.

Arcane Counterspelling: The Faith Wizard's skill at understanding and
manipulating arcane magic through faith increases to include the ability
to unravel arcane magic. Starting at 3rd level, the Faith Wizard can,
1/week, as a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity,
counterspell an arcane spell cast from a spell completion or spell
trigger item using an already prepared or spontaneously cast Dispel
Magic. The Faith Wizard uses his Faith Wizard level for the dispel
check.

When counterspelling, the Faith Wizard, if possible, can choose to
identify the spell being cast, but whether the Faith Wizard identifies
the spell or not, the counterspell must be resolved prior to the effect
of the spell being cast. The Faith Wizard gains additional uses of this
ability at 6th level and at 9th level.

Arcane Faith: The Faith Wizard's belief in magic allows the character to
cast a number of spells from the sorceror spell list as divine spells by
sacrificing divine spell slots. The DC for spells cast in this manner is
10 + spell level + the character's wisdom modifier. The character learns
and knows spells as a sorceror of her Faith Wizard level minus three and
casts them at a caster level of half the caster level of the
spellcasting class that grants the character access to the Magic domain.
Casting spells in this manner costs an already prepared divine spell
slot of equal or greater level to the spell being cast. The Faith Wizard
can use her Metamagic Faith ability to enhance spells gained through
Arcane Faith, but must pay for both abilites by sacrificing the
appropriate divine spell slots.

Arcane Channelling: The Faith Wizard's competence in his Magic domain
granted ability increases. The Faith Wizard can increase the save DCs of
arcane spells cast from spell completion and spell trigger items by +1,
and also gains +1 on caster level checks to overcome spell resistance
when using arcane spell trigger or arcane spell completion items.

Improved Metamagic Faith: The Faith Wizard's ability to manipulate
arcane spells through faith increases, thereby allowing him to reduce
the level of divine spell slot required for using Metamagic Faith by 1.

Arcane Faith Mastery: The Faith Wizard's mastery and understanding of
magic is such that the Faith Wizard can cast as a spell-like ability,
1/day, three spells of the Faith Wizard's choice that have been learnt
through Arcane Faith. The Faith Wizard can use Metamagic Faith to
enhance these spells, but must still sacrifice the required divine spell
slot to do so. Spells learnt through Arcane Faith Mastery do not require
the sacrifice of divine spell slots for normal use. The DC for spells
cast in this manner is 10 + spell level + the character's wisdom
modifier.
