One of the reasons so man variant prestige classes pop up is because a character may like part of the idea, but not the hole concept. All to often there is a few key abilities that a person would like but would have to devote to levels and abilities they do not want to spend. The end result new variations on an orginal prestige class. Ya there is an extreme amount of prestige classes out there but the variation to the original idea is to make something that the player wants to play and enjoy. If options were limmited I know I would feel restricted. That is one of the things that makes 3e so good, it is the flexability of the rules. The option to make somethign new. Alot of the time though afew changes to a currently exsisting class/prestige class could solve this problem though. The other issue about MPC (Mass Prestige Classes) is the balance factor. Alot of the time something is made with alot fo good intention, but it simply becomes to weak or to strong. Also the issue of alot of the problems being a player could easily be just as effective by makign proper multi-class and roleplaying choices is a good point, but I disagree. Alot of layers do nto design there characters path all the way to level 20. Sure they know what they would like ot be roughly but not 100% certain. So by having a variety of similar but different types a player can still enter an avenue that would be what they want. Flexability is the issue, as long as it remainns balancing and not rules breaking. Also how abotu a link to that dark farmer if its still around that is, pretty please :D
