Prestige Requirements

When a prestige class has a skill pre-requisite eg. Knowledge (planes) 7. And this skill is a cross class skill for a PC. Does that PC have to be 11th level before entering the class (max rank for cross class) or earlier if the ability modifier is high enough?
Example the PC has +3 bonus, can the character enter the class when they buy 4 ranks?

PrC skills require ranks, not total modifiers (so ability bonuses, synergy bonuses, bonuses from feats like skill focus, won't help get you into PrC more quickly)

So the only way to get to the class earlier is by multiclassing into a class that has the skill required as a core skill and then put as many ranks into it as possible to reach the max.

Or take one of the feats that allows you to turn a cross-class skill into a class skill.

...or accept that with the character you have, you aren't going to get into that class until you're a lot higher level. I mention it, because people always seem to discount this option.

Some careers are harder to follow down certain paths! :)

That is the solution it seems. :)
The question originated from me wanting to take levels in teh Sacred Exorcist class. The skill requirements are Knowledge Religion 10 (fine for a cleric) and Knowledge Planes (fine for a... er no actually. Only wizards and bards can get this skill as a class skill. Seems strange for such a divine based prestige class to have a non class skill as a requirement. And also means having to spend 14 points to acheive the desired rank. Pretty tough when you only get 2 + modifier per level  )
But thats another rant :)

The only way to get into the class earlier, is to wait until later?

That doesn't work :)

Your way is a way to get into the class, but not earlier :)

When you see the paradox, my young apprentice, then you are ready for the next step! :D

My remark was actually born of a little grumpiness ;) I have read a few threads here and elsewhere like that recently. Basically saying that ' the character I want to play can't get to the prestige class I want to play fast enough'. As if Prestige Classes might take some work! ;)

But it does raise the point that I recall discussing with someone last month - that many PrCs are written to be approached really only from a single angle because of their requirements. Now for some PrCs that's probably appropriate, but for others? I would like to see a few more PrCs where the requirements are more along the line of: 'needs A, needs B or X and Y'. That way, the path is kept flexible - which is one of the keystones of D&D3e design - whilst still being demanding.
