Whizbang Dustyboots

Gnometown Hero
It's not quite the reverse of a sunrod, and it's less effective than a smokestick. It may be an alchemy item, it might be a minor magical item.

Darkstone

This smoky crystal about the size of a man's fist shatters when thrown against a hard surface. Darkness extends in a 20 foot radius emanating from the spot the crystal was broken, creating shadowy illumination. All creatures in the area gain concealment (20% miss chance). Even creatures that can normally see in such conditions (such as with darkvision or low-light vision) have the miss chance in an area shrouded by the darkstone. The effect lasts 10 minutes.
For comparison's sake, a sunrod costs 2 gold pieces and lasts six hours. A smokestick lasts one round and costs 20 gold.

What would you price a darkstone at? My players are likely to pick up a half-dozen or so at the end of a fight inside Glangirn.

Considering that Obscuring Mist (3.5) lasts for one minute per level, though it gives better concealment, I'd say the darkstone was fairly powerful to be classed with those other items. Is it affected by wind?

Hmmm. No, but just reskinning a smokestick would actually be fine, now that I think about it, although I'm not nuts about "darkness" blowing away in wind.
