Printer Goes Bad

I just spent some $60.00 on new ink for my printer. I start printing out The Bestiary: Predators and actually get the 5 cover pages done (cover, p12, p92, p107, and p155), then started on the main PDF itself. That's when the trouble began.

The printer started stuttering, jamming, the printing itself became offset by an inch or so. Uncentered that is. Print quality went seriously downhill. I did everything I could think of, nothing worked.

The printer, an Epson 740i, is now on its way to the dump. I strongly advise against using any Epson product. As it now stands, I have no printer, and I would like a print-out of The Bestiary: Predators.

If you have a copy of the book, and you have a reliable printer, could you do a print-out for me? I can reimburse you for the cost of printing and mailing the finished job. Double-sided to save on paper, weight, and postage.

The whole printer industry is a mess. I would advice everyone to spend the extra money on a "laser printer" so you don't have to worry about rediciously expansive ink. Lexmark for example have made it illegal to refill their ink cartridges so they can make even more money selling ink. And don't get me started about the tracking dots (more info in another thread created by EricNoah).

Sorry, but I have nothing bad to say about my Epson Stylus Photo RX500 printer, copier, scanner. I've had it for about 6 months and it rocks. Having said that, if I have a large pdf or something I want a really good copy of, I print it at work ( ) on the color laser printer.

So true... InkJet cartridges are just too expensive. I have a LaserJet 4M that has been using the same laser toner cartridge for quite some time and no problems when it sits unused for awhile. In the long run the laser printers are the only way to go.

I have a Samsung ML-1710 laser printer.

Has 8 megs of memory. Not top of the line but not too shabby. Handles PDFs just fine and I got it for $99 after rebate.

Edit: Note that toner will run you at least twice as much as ink cartridges, but they last a heckuva lot longer, especially in toner saver mode.

One of the places I work we use exclusively Epson Printers for Ink Jet Personal Printers (as opposed to the 20 printers that used 18 different Ink Carts before we standardized).

We get our Epsons Pretty Cheap. The work fine for about 1-2 (depending on model) years, then they die an abrupt horrible death. Pretty much a guarntee.

So, 6 months? It should still work fine.

As for Ink Carts, you can go generic if you want, but that voids your warranty.

After all, Ink is where teh money is at in Printers.

I like my HP Laserjet 1012. I only wish it did doublesided automaticly instead of the print and refeed, but that's not that hard. Otherwise, It's still on the initial low yield cartridge it came with almost 2 years ago.

For Ink, which is good for color unless you want to spend gobs of money, HP and Cannon are good and should last a long time. Epson print cartidges are cheaper, but don't replace the print head, which can wear out over time, causing poorer quality prints.

As for the time of use, if you are heavy into printing large PDF's, you can wear even a good printer out in 6 months.

I prefer my Epson printers. Good printers. Great price. Although mine suddenly doesn't like printing on cardstock paper....

When does your warranty expire?

You know, back when I was young disposable items were things like pencils and bic pens. Printers were durable. Printers were also easy to repair. Ever try taking a current inkjet apart? I wouldn't be surprised to learn 90% of the cost of printer repair is for simply getting into one so the tech can repair it.

Repair nothing! For low-end models, it's actually cheaper to THROW YOUR PRINTER AWAY and buy a new one (that comes with ink cartridges) than to buy new ink cartridges.
