Brainstorming ... For Shapeshifting spell level 8, I think Fission can work. You split into two yous. The duplicate of yourself emerges as if from a full rest and endures for up to 10 minutes, only one of you needs to concentrate on the Fission spell. So two of you can fight with twice the spell power. (Only one Fission on one person at a time. But in addition to yourself, you could use a level 9 slot to cast it on an other team member as well.) At the end of the 10 minutes, you two recombine. But it is ok if one of you die. If either fission survives, you yourself survive. A down-and-dirty quick comparison for gauging balance: Dominate Monster is an excellent spell at spell level 8. It has two main benefits. • First. You get an other you, in the sense of a powerful monster that you control. • Second. You instantly defeat a monster, eliminating the threat. Together, they compare to Fission that splits you into two yous, each able to cast spells, seems roughly comparable. On the one hand, Fission doesnt eliminate a threat. On the other hand, you are probably more powerful than the monster who threatens you. So two yous versus two monsters seems (roughly) comparable to you and your dominatee versus one monster. Heh, phrased in that way, two versus one seems more powerful, but I still suspect two yous has the edge. In any case, I still feel Fission merits spell level 8, without any worries about doubling your spellcasting.
