I think you might have hit the nail on the head when you mentioned feelings of guilt and responsibility on the part of Armbuster.   It sounds like Armbuster feels really guilty, perhaps to the point of self hatred, of what has happened to him and his loved ones.He might feel bitterly guilty and self-hating for how he has been shamed and also how he percieves has failed to protect his brother. Armbuster might be displacing his self-hatred on Trax, his brother, or the elves as a way to deal with his inner discontent. This might be a reason why Armbuster is manifesting hostility to the PC Trax. Another reason (though perhaps not mutually exclusive to the previous one) might be more benevolent, motivated, as you said, to push away Trax in order to prevent him from getting hurt. Or this could all be a way to avoid having to get over and face his past experiences.The exact situation looks somewhat unclear, but it might be good to do something more Rogerian than psychoanalytic at this point.  Some listening and emotional reflections might do well to complement your other interventions. Teaching Armbuster some self-forgiveness might also help. Making Armbuster own the state of his being and encouraging him to accept responsibility for healing himself could promise to help as well. I don't think that the characters could force Armbuster to heal if he really didn't want to (short of magical intervention- which might have alignment issues). Looking at how Trax behaves and interacts with his brother might provide some help. Are there any issues coming from Trax's side of the fence?</blockquote>
